SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 17

Requesting the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a flood control study of various waterways in Mercer County to help with the prevention of flooding.

Whereas, Since June, 1995, Mercer County, West Virginia, has had to endure flooding conditions from various waterways throughout the county; and
Whereas, On January 28, 1996, Mercer County, West Virginia, was declared a disaster area by the president of the United States; and
Whereas, The citizens of Mercer County, West Virginia, have been greatly affected by the flooding of Bluestone River, Brush Creek, East River, Crane Creek, Lorton Lick Creek and the waterway running south from the Mercer County airport to the Virginia state line; and
Whereas, The continuous flooding of various waterways in Mercer County, West Virginia, has caused excessive economic losses to businesses and citizens across the affected areas;
Whereas, The citizens of Mercer County, West Virginia, desire the protection of its government for the preservation of life and prosperity; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby requests the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to conduct a flood control study of Bluestone River, Brush Creek, East River, Crane Creek, Lorton Lick Creek and the waterway running south from the Mercer County airport to the Virginia state line and to take appropriate action to correct the flooding of these areas for the protection to the citizens of Mercer County, West Virginia; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, United States Senators Robert C. Byrd and John D. Rockefeller IV and United States Representative Nick Joe Rahall.
